Me in Brief

Prior to his work at Dalhousie, Professor Barker held faculty positions at Waikato University in New Zealand and in the USA at Marquette University in Milwaukee, the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. His doctorate is from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Professor Barker also served in the US military and worked as an operations and sales manager for a large US transportation company.

Professor Barker’s work has appeared in a number of professional journals, such as Academy of Management Review, Organization Studies, Human Relations, and Administrative Science Quarterly, and he has won international acclaim for his research on teamwork and organizational change. He has lectured or held visiting positions at a number of universities and organizations worldwide. He is the immediate past editor of Management Communication Quarterly and serves on the editorial board of many professional journals.

Professor Barker’s current research involves the ethics of leadership in complexity and the derivation of ethical activity in chaotic environments and complex systems, such as how workers make sense of safety issues. His recent publications concern language use and organizational change in complex environments and the effects of stakeholder demands on managerial sense making during crisis.
