Me in Brief

José Carlos is a PhD Candidate (Strategy and Organization; support area Political Science) at McGill University. He holds an MSc (Distinction) in Development Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Prior to pursuing a PhD José Carlos worked as a Researcher / Research Analyst at the UN Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), where, together with Dr. Peter Utting, UNRISD Deputy Director, he co-edited two volumes on the political economy of CSR in developing countries. In a former life, he worked as a Business Analyst, Project Manager and Group Manager in several organizations within the IT and aviation industries, and the NGO sector.

Research interests include: 1) impact of organizational structures/ practices upon private governance and standards; 2) reciprocal links between business strategy and public policy; 3) determination, consolidation and influence of business interests on government policy-making in comparative perspective; 3) political economy of corporate social responsibility (CSR). His doctoral thesis, tentatively titled "Corporations as political actors: Strategic, organizational and political perspectives on the private-public policy nexus", compares CSR code-setting initiatives in the apparel, electronics and mining industries.

Currenty residing in Canada, José Carlos has lived in Switzerland, Brazil, and the UK. Fluent in English, French and Portuguese, he is now struggling with Español.
