SummaryThe advice offered by the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities and American Society for Law, Medicine and Ethics (ASBH/ASLME) Task Force report on Bioethics Consultation in the Private Sector
Abstract / DescriptionThe advice offered by the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities and American Society for Law, Medicine and Ethics (ASBH/ASLME) Task Force report on Bioethics Consultation in the Private Sector is reasonable, practical, constructive, and almost entirely unlikely to resolve the debate between opponents and advocates of bioethics consultation in the private sector. The debate over private sector consultation on the part of bioethicists and bioethics centers now has some miles on it. Chins have been stroked, tables have been pounded, and tears have been shed. The positions of strong advocates and strong critics have been delineated indeed, both stated and caricatured. Battle lines have been drawn. But as is so often the case when risks and benefits of controversial activities are debated, one cannot help but suspect that the vast majority of interested, intelligent folks straddle those battle lines somewhat uncomfortably. True dilemmas, it is said, are few, but the question of whether bioethics should engage with industry by providing consultation services may just fit the bill. The dilemma is this: it seems like the bioethics community should help, but it also seems that it must not.
