Do Values Matter?

David Callahan

Author, Journalist and Co-Founder, Demos

In his book The Cheating Culture, David Callahan shows that cheating on every level-from the highly publicized corporate scandals to Little League fraud-has risen dramatically in the last two decades. He makes a powerful case for why it matters and how a dog-eat-dog economic climate and unfettered market have corroded our values. In his follow up book, The Moral Centre, Callahan goes further into the debate on social and political values. With insights garnered from in-depth research and interviews, he argues that selfishness is careening out of control and examines the effect of a violent and consumerist culture on children, and the lack of a greater purpose.

David Callahan is cofounder and director of research at the public policy center Demos in New York. The author of five books, he has published articles in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and USA Today, and has been a frequent commentator on CNN, MSNBC, and NPR. He received a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton University and lives in New York City.
