Equator Principles (EP) are a transnational voluntary framework for financial institutions and their clients to determine, assess and manage environmental and social risks and impacts of large-scale infrastructure development projects. The principles set environmental and social standards for financial institutions that limit access to project finance or project-related corporate loans for their clients, with the aim of curbing negative impacts and supporting sustainable development. With the help of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), ten major banks developed the Equator Principles to address concerns and NGO campaigns pointing to the negative impacts of these projects, in many cases funded by the World Bank.
