Welcome...to the website portal for the Socially Responsible Development in the Rapidly Evolving Canadian North Project web portal, a Public Outreach project funded by Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada.

ReportProject Update:
March 2012: In January 2012, CBERN prepared and presented its report on identifying knowledge needs for mining development to the Naskapi Steering Committee and the Naskapi community.

The first step in the plan has now been completed. This report to the Naskapi community describes what the research team found. The second part of the plan is to improve access to information that will help the community address its concerns and realize its hopes for building a better and stronger future.

The initiative for this project originated with our community partner, the Naskapi Nation of northern Quebec. For the Naskapi Nation and many other communities in the Canadian North, resource extraction and mining offer an opportunity, and, in some cases, the only realistic opportunity, for economic development.

This research project aims to:

  1. Test the use of information communication technology to enable greater understanding within the Naskapi Nation of current knowledge and tools with respect to mining and Aboriginal community development; and
  2. Enable the establishment of community well-being self-evaluation in order to track outcomes over time.

This website portal will provide a suite of tools and resources that will be used to share knowledge and build capacity within the Naskapi community.
